During a productive meeting, Mr. Olumide Sogunle, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, expressed his full backing for the project, recognizing its potential to enhance safety and sustainability on Lagos’ waterways.

Mr. Sogunle commended LASWA for its vision, highlighting that the Ministry would provide all the necessary support to ensure the project’s success. He also encouraged LASWA to continue prioritizing safety by ensuring adequate insurance coverage for both ferries and passengers, which was acknowledged by LASWA’s General Manager, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel.

The “Omi Eko” project is set to make a significant impact on Lagos’ water transportation system. Mr. Emmanuel explained that the project will introduce 78 new electric-powered ferries, boosting safety, increasing ridership, and creating much-needed employment opportunities. He outlined other LASWA initiatives, such as a state-of-the-art Command and Control Centre for real-time monitoring, alongside developments in terminals, jetties, and fuel dumps.

As part of the project’s strategy, LASWA will continue to ensure the safety and efficiency of water transportation with enhanced monitoring and rescue services. Mr. Emmanuel solicited the Ministry’s assistance, specifically requesting a liaison officer to help guide the successful implementation of the OMI EKO Vision 2024-2027 project.

The collaborative efforts of LASWA and the Ministry of Information and Strategy are sure to bring about a new era in Lagos’ water transport, improving infrastructure and driving economic growth through innovation and partnership.
