Edo First Lady Advocates Compassionate Healthcare and Prioritization of Life-Saving Services
The Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has called on medical professionals in Edo State Specialist Hospital (ESH) to prioritize life-saving treatments over immediate payment demands, particularly in emergency cases.
During an engagement with the Managing Director of ESH, Dr. Anthonia Njoku, and management staff at the Government House in Benin City, Mrs. Anani emphasized the importance of compassion in healthcare delivery.
“Sometimes, when people come to the hospital, they are often told to pay first. However, as medical professionals, our primary duty is to save lives. It is essential that we show a human face in our services,” she stated.
She commended the hospital’s ongoing health initiatives, particularly the free cervical cancer screening program, which aims to improve the well-being of women in the state. Expressing concern over women’s and children’s nutrition, she emphasized the critical role of proper diet in disease prevention.
“A healthy woman is a healthy nation. Society starts from the family unit, and the woman is central to nation-building. Proper nutrition can prevent many illnesses, and ensuring the health of women is key to creating a healthier society,” Mrs. Anani added.
She reiterated the state government’s commitment to fully equipping the hospital to handle diverse medical cases, thereby reducing the need for referrals.
In appreciation of her advocacy, Dr. Njoku lauded the First Lady’s support, stating, “We at Edo Specialist Hospital are fully committed to supporting your programs. Your leadership has been inspiring, and we are grateful for your contributions to healthcare development.”
She also acknowledged Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration for prioritizing healthcare improvements, highlighting government interventions such as provision of air conditioners, transformers, and ventilators for the ICU, which have enhanced the hospital’s efficiency.
