Governor Monday Okpebholo is setting a new benchmark for good governance in Edo State by prioritizing transparency, accountability, and prudent management of state resources.

A firm believer in responsible leadership, Governor Okpebholo has demonstrated that governance is about serving the people, ensuring accountability, and promoting integrity in public service.

According to Professor Adebayo Akerele, “Leaders must understand the needs of the people and must live among them to truly serve. Leadership is a call to service, and every decision must be guided by transparency and accountability.”

This philosophy is evident in Governor Okpebholo’s recent directive to all 18 Local Government Area (LGA) Chairmen to submit their financial statements to the Assets Verification Committee through the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

The governor firmly believes that scrutiny in governance fosters public trust, ensuring that state resources are judiciously utilized for collective development.

“Transparency and accountability are the foundations of good governance. Any leader entrusted with public office must be open to scrutiny. Governance is not about personal gain; it is about serving the people diligently,” Governor Okpebholo asserted.

This commitment to financial integrity is crucial in addressing the governance failures of the past administration. Reports from the Assets Verification Committee have revealed widespread mismanagement and misappropriation of state resources under the previous administration, highlighting the urgent need for reforms.

Governor Okpebholo has also emphasized the importance of political leaders being good stewards of public funds, ensuring that state revenue is directed toward critical projects such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, and job creation.

Furthermore, under Section 20 of the Local Government Laws, the Edo State House of Assembly retains the authority to investigate, suspend, or dissolve any LGA administration found guilty of mismanaging funds or failing in its responsibilities.

“During my tenure as governor, Edo State will set a new standard for good governance. Every kobo of state funds will be accounted for, and every project will be implemented in the interest of the people,” Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed.

His administration’s approach signals a paradigm shift in governance, ensuring that political leadership is driven by service rather than personal enrichment.

The governor’s commitment to transparency and accountability aligns with his vision of a progressive Edo State, where public office holders prioritize the well-being of citizens over political gains.

This transformation is crucial in addressing the historical mismanagement of resources, ensuring that government funds are channeled into essential services, infrastructure, and economic development initiatives that benefit every Edo resident.

As Edo State embarks on a new chapter under Governor Okpebholo’s leadership, citizens can expect a government that upholds integrity, prioritizes people-centered policies, and fosters economic growth through effective governance.
