In a bold and strategic move to combat drug abuse, Kogi State Governor, His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, FCA, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to eradicating drug-related crimes by overseeing the public destruction of 25 tons of illicit drugs.
The event, held beside Confluence Beach Hotel, Ganaja, Lokoja, was conducted in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and marked a significant milestone in the fight against narcotics in the state. Representing the governor at the event, Commander Jerry Duro Omodara (Rtd.), State Security Adviser, emphasized the critical role of a drug-free environment in safeguarding the youth and ensuring societal stability.
“Our commitment is unwavering. A drug-free Kogi State is not just an ambition but a necessity. We are determined to rid our communities of illicit substances and protect our future generations from the devastating effects of drug abuse,” he stated.
Governor Ododo also announced a targeted campaign to eradicate cannabis cultivation in four Local Government Areas, pledging to partner with the NDLEA to dismantle drug trafficking networks and prevent illegal farming activities.
Brigadier General Muhammed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), Chairman and CEO of NDLEA, represented by Alhaji Suleiman Ahmed Nigi, commended Kogi State’s proactive stance against drug abuse. He emphasized the severe security implications of narcotic drugs, highlighting that 14.3 million Nigerians aged 15-64 are drug users, with 10.6 million abusing cannabis—one of the highest figures globally.
The illicit drugs destroyed included Cannabis Sativa, Tramadol, Rohypnol, Diazepam, and other harmful substances. Commander of Narcotics, U.M. Yahoza, praised Governor Ododo for his relentless fight against drug cartels, noting that over 24 vehicles belonging to drug dealers have been forfeited.
