Kogi State and National Water Resources Institute Partner for Sustainable Waste Management

In a strategic move to enhance waste management and environmental sustainability, the Kogi State Government has partnered with the National Water Resources Institute (NWRI), Kaduna, under the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, to conduct a scientific assessment of dumpsite locations in Lokoja metropolis.
A team of experts, led by Engr. Hadiza Ajoge, visited the state to evaluate existing waste disposal sites, analyze their environmental impact, and propose sustainable solutions.
“This study will provide data-driven insights into pollution risks and ensure waste management decisions align with global best practices,” Engr. Ajoge stated.
Kogi State Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Engr. Joseph Oluwasegun, described the assessment as a critical step toward achieving environmental sustainability and water resource protection.
“His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, is committed to implementing strategies that safeguard public health and prevent environmental hazards,” he emphasized.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr. Yahaya Farouk, also lauded the initiative, stressing the need for proper dumpsite location planning to prevent contamination of surface and groundwater sources.
The study engaged key stakeholders, including government agencies, community leaders, and academics from Federal University Lokoja, to assess factors such as proximity to residential areas, terrain suitability, accessibility, and ecological impact.
Following the stakeholder consultations, the team conducted on-site inspections and water quality tests at major dumpsites, including Sarkin Noma, Kabawa, Felele, Akpami-Oba Community, Adankolo, Ganaja, and Confluence Beach.
The findings will inform future waste management policies, including potential dumpsite relocations and measures to mitigate environmental hazards.
The Kogi State Government remains committed to sustainability and urges residents to support efforts aimed at keeping the state clean, safe, and environmentally friendly.
