Lagos State Government Urges Residents to Adopt Eco-Friendly Alternatives to Single-Use Plastics

The Lagos State Government (LASG) has intensified its campaign against environmental pollution, urging residents to embrace eco-friendly and biodegradable alternatives in place of single-use plastics.
At a public awareness program on the ban of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics, the Special Adviser on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, emphasized that public education is key to achieving a sustainable future.
“Legislation alone cannot drive change—it requires the collective effort of individuals. By transitioning away from single-use plastics, we are taking a bold step towards a cleaner, healthier Lagos,” he stated.
He revealed that 870,000 metric tonnes of Styrofoam waste contribute to half of Lagos’ total waste volume annually, clogging drainage systems, polluting water channels, and endangering marine life.
As part of Lagos’ phased transition, the government is promoting sustainable alternatives while collaborating with private organizations to ensure a smooth shift to eco-friendly solutions.
The Founder of Hephzibarian Women Initiative, Barr. Omowunmi Ogungbaibi, highlighted the program’s role in supporting local businesses that produce biodegradable packaging materials.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration remains committed to leading Lagos towards environmental sustainability, calling on all residents to support eco-friendly practices for a cleaner and greener city.
