Edo Government Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Mining to Safeguard Environment and Public Safety

The Edo State Government has ramped up its efforts to curb illegal mining activities that pose serious threats to both the environment and public safety.
Led by the Commissioner for Mining, Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, a recent inspection uncovered alarming cases of environmental degradation and hazardous mining operations. In Erhua, an illegal mining site was found dangerously close to a federal road and high-tension power lines, while in Iruekpen, another site was operating without a license, proper authorization, or an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
The Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration remains resolute in its mission to protect Edo’s natural resources, enforce regulatory compliance, and ensure mining activities align with sustainable development goals.
