Governor Otu Champions Erosion Control Efforts in Calabar, Assures Sustainable Solutions

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to tackling erosion and flooding in the state, emphasizing a strategic and sustainable approach to mitigate the challenges.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Emmanuel Ironbar, the Governor led an inspection tour of critical gully erosion sites in Calabar alongside officials from the Nigeria Climate Adaptation – Erosion & Watershed Program (NEWMAP-EIB). The visit highlighted the administration’s proactive efforts in environmental restoration and disaster prevention.
At the Elijah Henshaw gully erosion site, Mr. Ironbar acknowledged the site’s previous state, which had caused severe property losses and hardships for residents. He reassured the public that the government is actively working with relevant agencies to deploy advanced, science-based solutions that will ensure long-term stability.
The State Project Coordinator of CRS NEWMAP-EIB, Prof. Emmanuel Eyo, commended the government’s commitment to addressing the erosion problem. He emphasized that the challenge had been exacerbated by poor drainage termination, improper waste disposal, and environmental mismanagement. To combat these issues, he advocated for proper drainage infrastructure, soil stabilization techniques, and improved environmental management.
The inspection covered both active and newly identified high-risk erosion sites. Ongoing intervention projects include those at Elijah Henshaw and Marina Bayside, while additional locations, such as Ikot Effangha Mkpa, Summit Hills, and Mechanic Village gully sites, have been earmarked for urgent attention.
Governor Otu’s administration remains dedicated to implementing lasting solutions that will protect communities and enhance the state’s environmental resilience.
