Edo State Government and FG Crack Down on Illegal Mining to Protect Environment

In a decisive move to safeguard the environment and promote responsible mining, the Edo State Ministry of Mining, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, has shut down two illegal mining sites in the state.

The crackdown, which took place in Erhua Community near Ehor (Edo South) and Iruekpen (Edo Central), followed an inspection that revealed the sites were operating without proper licenses and in violation of environmental and mining regulations.

Leading the inspection team, Edo State Commissioner for Mining, Andrew Ijegbai, expressed deep concern over the level of environmental degradation and the dangers posed by illegal operations. He emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal mining and its commitment to enforcing compliance with established laws.

“The illegal mining site at Erhua was found to be operating dangerously close to a federal road and excavating under high-tension power lines, creating serious risks for residents,” Ijegbai stated. “Similarly, the site at Iruekpen had no license, lacked official consent, and had no environmental impact assessment, endangering both the community and infrastructure.”

Governor Monday Okpebholo has directed a comprehensive investigation into illegal mining activities across the state and reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to eliminate such practices while promoting sustainable and legally compliant mining operations.
