Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has demonstrated his strong commitment to improving healthcare in Ondo State by increasing funding for the Primary Healthcare Development Agency (PHCDA) by 50%. The Permanent Secretary of the agency, Dr. Francis Akanbiemu, made the announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting on the National Immunization Plus Days (NIPDs), emphasizing the Governor’s dedication to strengthening primary health services across the state.
“Governor Aiyedatiwa’s first action upon assuming office was to increase our subvention by 50%, signaling his strong support for primary healthcare,” Dr. Akanbiemu stated. The Governor’s decision reflects a clear recognition of the importance of primary healthcare, which serves over 70% of the state’s population.
In addition to the funding increase, Governor Aiyedatiwa allocated N50 million to power the cold chain for vaccines and another N16 million for the completion of infrastructure at the agency’s facilities. This significant investment is aimed at improving healthcare delivery, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
Akanbiemu also highlighted that 109 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across Ondo State are currently undergoing renovation, with the support of the World Bank. These improvements will ensure that citizens have access to better healthcare services, including vital immunization programs.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s focus on child health and immunization was also underscored, as he announced plans for an extensive immunization campaign targeting polio, Vitamin A supplementation, and other routine vaccinations. The campaign, set for May 3–8, will be conducted at designated health facilities, churches, and mosques across the state.
Furthermore, the state government is introducing a policy that will require an immunization card for school enrollment, ensuring that children are protected against preventable diseases from an early age. Governor Aiyedatiwa has also approved the distribution of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to girls aged 9 to 14, further strengthening the state’s commitment to public health.
The Governor’s proactive approach in boosting primary healthcare funding and enhancing immunization efforts exemplifies his dedication to improving the health and well-being of Ondo State residents. His leadership is transforming the state’s healthcare landscape, ensuring a healthier future for generations to come.
