In a remarkable show of leadership and respect for democratic values, Gombe State Governor and Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has commended journalists for their vital role in nation-building as the world marks the 2025 World Press Freedom Day.
In his goodwill message, Governor Inuwa Yahaya paid glowing tribute to media professionals in Gombe State and across Nigeria, applauding their unwavering commitment to truth, transparency, and public enlightenment. He described journalists as indispensable allies in the democratic process and pillars of good governance.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” the Governor highlighted the significance of responsible journalism in an age increasingly shaped by digital transformation and artificial intelligence.
Governor Yahaya noted that while the digital era presents incredible opportunities for information sharing and societal progress, it also poses challenges such as misinformation, fake news, and threats to the safety of media workers. He emphasized the need for integrity, ethical standards, and professional courage in navigating these complexities.
“The digital age has redefined how information is produced and consumed,” the Governor said. “But it also demands a renewed commitment to accuracy, responsibility, and ethical values that protect public trust.”
He expressed pride in the professionalism displayed by journalists in Gombe State, especially in their efforts to inform the public about government policies and international developments. He praised them for being agents of enlightenment and accountability, encouraging them to continue fostering democratic ideals through credible reporting.
“As we celebrate this important day,” Governor Yahaya said, “I urge you to continue to stand firm in the pursuit of a society where information uplifts, empowers, and leaves no one behind.”
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to press freedom, the Governor assured journalists of continued support and collaboration to promote an environment where they can operate freely and fearlessly.
Governor Yahaya concluded by emphasizing the importance of World Press Freedom Day as a time to recognize the media’s role in strengthening governance and to reaffirm the value of information as a tool for empowerment and social transformation.
