Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration has activated a full-scale, 24/7 digital traffic enforcement system to drive its smart city ambitions and bolster public safety, marking a technological leap that redefines how Lagos navigates urban challenges.

Announced during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, the project was unveiled by the Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Mr. Olatubosun Alake. He described it as a landmark initiative to harness digital tools for effective governance, economic growth, and security.

The system includes the phased installation of intelligent video surveillance infrastructure strategically placed across the city. These AI-powered systems are designed to manage traffic seamlessly, enhance law enforcement, and ensure round-the-clock monitoring.

“A truly digitised city necessitates a robust synergy between physical and digital infrastructure,” Mr. Alake explained. He highlighted the pivotal role of the ongoing Metrofibre Project, which is laying 6,000 kilometers of optic fibre to boost connectivity and digital access across Lagos.

The initiative goes beyond traffic control—it is an integral part of a broader digital ecosystem. Enterprise architecture is being applied to reform the state’s data infrastructure, streamlining processes and reinforcing collaboration with the private sector.

Alake further announced the upcoming launch of the Lagos State Digital Services Platform—a unified digital hub designed to simplify residents’ access to government services and real-time information.

Additionally, the state is set to implement a comprehensive AI adoption strategy, including chatbot integration, AI-driven e-Governance services, and statewide AI guidelines to promote ethical innovation.

On cybersecurity, the Commissioner revealed that Lagos has thwarted two significant data breaches in the past year. With the deployment of 109 certified Data Protection Officers across ministries, the state continues to lead Nigeria in data compliance and digital resilience.

Mr. Alake concluded with a resounding message: “This administration’s commitment to digital transformation transcends mere efficiency gains; it is fundamentally about the safety, prosperity, and empowerment of every Lagosian.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership continues to position Lagos as Nigeria’s innovation powerhouse, charting a visionary path toward a fully smart, secure, and responsive state.
