Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, addressed the Workers’ Day celebration at the Giginya Stadium in Sokoto on Thursday, announcing the recovery of N30,000 in misappropriated Sallah gifts initially meant for local government and primary school teachers. He reassured the workers that the recovered funds would soon be disbursed to the rightful beneficiaries according to established procedures.

Gov. Aliyu highlighted his administration’s efforts to revitalize the state’s civil service, including the prompt payment of salaries, the implementation of the new national minimum wage of N70,000, and the payment of N30,000 Sallah gifts to all civil servants. He also emphasized the clearance of the N15 billion backlog in gratuities owed retirees since 2016, with N500 million being released monthly to settle this debt.

Other key initiatives included restoring monthly cash allocations to all MDAs and organizing capacity-building workshops for civil servants. Gov. Aliyu further revealed plans to integrate civil servants into the state’s housing policy, offering them the opportunity to purchase homes through an owner-occupier scheme. He also announced the launch of the “Shagon Sauki na Ahmadun Alu” initiative, which aims to sell essential commodities to civil servants at highly subsidized rates.

The Governor urged the workers to remain dedicated and committed to their duties for the state’s progress. In his remarks, the Sokoto State NLC Chairperson, Comrade Abdullahi Aliyu, praised the Governor for prioritizing workers’ welfare and for his prompt actions in addressing key issues such as salary payments and the full implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage.
