Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has broken new ground in workers’ welfare by announcing that retirees will now receive their gratuity within one hour of retirement. Speaking during the Workers’ Day celebration in Abakaliki, the governor emphasized that this innovation is part of broader reforms to digitize the payroll system and ensure prompt, efficient service delivery.

Governor Nwifuru also proudly revealed that his administration has cleared all outstanding gratuity arrears, some dating back 27 years. He reiterated his pledge to prioritize worker welfare, noting that the ₦10,000 May Day bonus was a token of appreciation for their hard work and loyalty. “We are committed to creating a system that upholds the dignity of labour and rewards excellence,” he said.

He further announced plans for a reward scheme to recognize punctuality, professionalism, and outstanding service. The State NLC Chairman, Prof. Ogugua Egwu, acknowledged the governor’s strides but highlighted additional needs, including housing estates, reinstatement of certain salaries, and enhanced retirement packages. The Governor assured continued reforms under the “People’s Charter of Needs Agenda.”
