Benue Government Shuts School Over Poor Standards

The Benue State Government has closed down the Benedictine Order of Peace and Unity Academy Foundation in Nyiman, Makurdi, citing severe deficiencies in meeting approved educational standards. The school was reportedly operating from an uncompleted hotel building, with no curriculum, qualified teachers, or necessary resources like a lesson plan or scheme of work. Director General of the Bureau for Education Quality Assurance (BEQA), Terna Francis, led the team responsible for the closure, warning that substandard schools would not be tolerated in the state.
BEQA has identified 2,416 illegal schools operating in Benue State and has issued notices to proprietors, instructing them to either meet the required standards or face closure. Francis stressed the risks of allowing children to remain in unsafe and unregulated environments, adding that the Benedictine Order Academy was never registered or approved by the government.
He urged parents to immediately withdraw their children from the school and enroll them in government-approved institutions.
