Benue State Government Pioneers Agricultural Transformation Through Strategic Partnership with Zebra CropBank

In a bold step toward revolutionizing Benue’s agricultural sector, the Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia-led administration has forged a strategic partnership with Zebra CropBank to enhance food security, modernize storage infrastructure, and minimize post-harvest losses. The landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zebra Crop House Ltd is a game-changer for farmers across the state, ensuring their hard work translates into economic prosperity.
The official signing ceremony, presided over by Deputy Governor H.E. Barr. Dr. Sam Ode, marked a milestone in Benue’s agricultural transformation. The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barr. Serumun Aber, formalized the agreement, while Aondoaseer Leo-Angelo Viashima, Director General of the Bureau for International Cooperation and Development (BICD), witnessed the momentous occasion. The Benue State Agricultural Development Company, under Hon. Aorkwagh Donald Akula, will oversee the operationalization of this initiative.
Governor Alia’s administration remains steadfast in its commitment to revitalizing agriculture, a sector critical to Benue’s identity as the “Food Basket of the Nation.” The collaboration with Zebra CropBank directly aligns with his vision of boosting farmers’ productivity, bridging infrastructural gaps, and facilitating access to larger markets. By addressing the long-standing challenge of post-harvest losses, the government is fostering sustainable economic growth for local farmers.
Zebra CropBank, under the leadership of CEO Buffy Okeke-Ojiudu, will establish a network of state-of-the-art agricultural warehouses across the state. These facilities will meet international standards, ensuring produce is stored safely and remains market-ready. This strategic investment will significantly reduce food wastage, increase the commercial viability of farming, and enhance Benue’s competitiveness in agribusiness.
Beyond storage infrastructure, the partnership prioritizes knowledge transfer and capacity building. Farmers will receive training on advanced storage techniques and post-harvest management, equipping them with skills to maximize productivity. Governor Alia has consistently emphasized the importance of education and technology in agriculture, ensuring that farmers benefit from modern innovations.
Deputy Governor Sam Ode described the initiative as a “transformative investment in the future of Benue’s farmers.” He emphasized that the administration is committed to practical solutions that empower local farmers and position Benue as a leader in agricultural innovation.
Furthermore, the Benue State Government will provide land for warehouse construction, fast-track regulatory approvals, and prioritize critical infrastructure development, such as roads, electricity, and water supply, to facilitate seamless operations. These efforts reflect Governor Alia’s holistic approach to rural development and economic expansion.
Hon. Fidelis Unongu, Special Adviser on Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, hailed the partnership as a “bold step toward securing the livelihoods of thousands of farmers.” He reiterated the administration’s unwavering focus on agribusiness as a tool for economic empowerment.
This initiative not only strengthens Benue’s agricultural sector but also underscores Governor Alia’s vision of positioning the state as an agricultural powerhouse, ensuring long-term prosperity for farmers and rural communities.
