The Cross River State government has launched an initiative to engage approximately 100,000 youths in agriculture and related fields. The scheme, known as Project Grow, aims to equip young people with the skills needed to thrive in the agricultural sector and promote self-reliance.

At the flag-off ceremony in Calabar, Commissioner for Agriculture and Irrigation, Mr. Johnson Ebokpo Jr., emphasized the project’s goal to combat multidimensional poverty and boost food production. He outlined the project’s focus on increasing food output and establishing a robust agro-economy in the state.

Ebokpo criticized past agricultural efforts for failing to significantly increase food production despite substantial investments. He highlighted Project Grow’s adoption of the Michael Okpara model to maximize productivity and eliminate waste, positioning Cross River as a major producer of sorghum, maize, cattle fodder, and rice.

Project Grow Director, Mr. Denis Ikpali, discussed the challenges faced by farmers, including difficulties in accessing loans and acquiring the right inputs. He assured that the scheme includes a substantial credit facility of 30 billion naira to support genuine farmers, addressing financing gaps in the agricultural sector.

The initiative aims to transform Cross River into a leading agricultural hub, create economic opportunities, and lift thousands out of poverty. With ongoing support and strategic partnerships, Project Grow is poised to make a significant impact on the state’s economy and agricultural landscape.
