The Ekiti State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Olapeju Babafemi, has cautioned against the indiscriminate posting of pictures and videos of minors in distress on social media and other mass media platforms, emphasizing that such actions violate constitutional and legal provisions protecting children’s rights.

Speaking in Ado-Ekiti, Mrs. Babafemi condemned the insensitivity of individuals who share distressing images of children, stressing that such actions can have severe psychological effects and infringe on their human dignity.

Citing Section 34(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, she reiterated that every individual is entitled to respect for the dignity of their person. She also referenced Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2012, which criminalizes the sharing of harmful and offensive content online, particularly those that violate privacy and dignity.

“Posting distressing images of minors without consent not only breaches their rights but also affects their mental and emotional well-being. We must show empathy, not exploitation,” she stated.

Mrs. Babafemi reaffirmed the Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji administration’s unwavering commitment to child protection and development. She called on stakeholders—including civil society organizations, faith-based groups, and community leaders—to strengthen efforts in promoting peace, tolerance, and family unity to safeguard children’s rights.

She assured that the Ekiti State Government would continue implementing policies and programs that prioritize the welfare and holistic development of children in the state.
