Gombe State Launches Fully Operational Surveillance and Diagnostic Laboratory

In a major stride toward modernizing livestock healthcare, the Gombe State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, under the leadership of Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, has established a state-of-the-art Veterinary Diagnostic and Disease Surveillance Laboratory at the Tashan Dukku Livestock Market in Gombe Metropolis.
Now fully operational, following its official handover to the Gombe State Government, the laboratory is set to transform veterinary services by enhancing disease surveillance, diagnosis, and control, ultimately improving livestock health and productivity across the state.
For years, livestock diseases have posed challenges to farmers, leading to economic losses and uncontrolled outbreaks. This cutting-edge facility, attached to the newly upgraded Gombe Veterinary Clinic, is equipped to:
- Detect livestock diseases early to prevent widespread outbreaks.
- Provide accurate and timely diagnoses for effective treatment.
- Conduct surveillance of zoonotic diseases that can spread from animals to humans.
- Improve livestock productivity and profitability through advanced disease control.
Beyond livestock health, the facility also plays a crucial role in protecting public health, as many zoonotic diseases—including brucellosis, tuberculosis, anthrax, and avian influenza—can be transmitted to humans. By enabling early detection and containment, the laboratory will enhance food safety, improve hygiene standards, and promote safe meat and dairy production.
This milestone positions Gombe State as a national model for veterinary healthcare, reinforcing the government’s commitment to science-driven agriculture and a healthier, more prosperous livestock economy.
