In a clear demonstration of his administration’s unwavering respect for constitutional order and the rule of law, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has pledged to implement the recent directive of the National Judicial Council (NJC) concerning the appointment of the acting Chief Judge of the state.

The state government, in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba, affirmed its readiness to comply with the NJC’s advisory after a thorough review of the Council’s position. The NJC had advised a reversal of the appointment of Hon. Justice Theophilus Nzeukwu as Acting Chief Judge, citing constitutional procedures.

According to Emelumba, the appointment was made in good faith and based on credible information available to the Governor at the time, which indicated that Justice Nzeukwu was the most senior judicial officer without pending issues. He stressed that this rationale was transparently communicated to the NJC during the process.

“Governor Uzodimma acted within legal boundaries and with the best interest of the judiciary at heart,” Emelumba stated. “However, as a government that deeply values judicial independence and due process, we have accepted the NJC’s latest position and are already taking necessary steps to implement the directive.”

This development underscores the Imo State Government’s commitment to promoting a harmonious working relationship with the judiciary and reinforcing the independence of the third arm of government.

Observers see the Governor’s swift response as a reflection of statesmanship and institutional maturity, further solidifying his administration’s image as one that upholds the supremacy of the Constitution and the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
