Governor Ahmed Aliyu Applauded for Workers’ Welfare, Moves to Address LG Retirees’ Gratuity

Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has once again demonstrated his unwavering commitment to the welfare of workers and retirees, as he announced plans to address the long-standing issue of unpaid gratuities for local government retirees.
This came following a heartfelt appeal from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Chairperson, Comrade Abdullahi Aliyu, during the 2024 May Day celebrations in Sokoto. The NLC leader praised the governor’s compassionate governance, particularly his recent decision to clear the backlog of gratuities for state workers—a gesture described as both historic and humane.
“Governor Ahmed Aliyu has shown exceptional leadership by earmarking ₦500 million monthly to clear arrears dating back to 2016, and an additional ₦300 million monthly for retirees from 2023 onwards,” Comrade Aliyu stated. “We are confident that this same gesture will be extended to our colleagues at the local government level.”
In his address, Governor Aliyu responded with reassurance, announcing plans to establish a dedicated committee to investigate and resolve the issue of unpaid gratuities for LG retirees. He emphasized that transparency and fairness will guide the process, ensuring that only genuine beneficiaries are paid.
“Our administration is built on justice, compassion, and accountability,” Governor Aliyu affirmed. “Just as we’ve done for state retirees, we will work towards easing the burden on our local government heroes.”
The governor called for patience and continued support from retirees and residents, expressing gratitude for their steadfast prayers and solidarity with his administration.
