Governor Alia: Unlocking Opportunities for Benue from UNGA 24

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has expressed optimism that the recently concluded United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 24) holds immense potential for Nigeria, particularly Benue State. Speaking at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport upon his return from New York, where he was part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s delegation, Governor Alia shared his commitment to pursuing opportunities that would directly benefit the people of Benue.
Governor Alia emphasized that crucial global development issues, particularly those impacting Africa, were addressed by world leaders during the assembly. He noted that sub-national governments, like Benue, are now better positioned to leverage international support for local challenges. Additionally, he held productive bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA, focusing on enhancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the state and ensuring their long-term impact.
He disclosed that he met with representatives of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), advocating for more comprehensive support for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Benue. Governor Alia highlighted the need for extended interventions and collaboration to address security issues in parts of the state, including Apa, Agatu, Guma, and others.
The Governor’s participation at the UNGA underscores his proactive leadership and dedication to advancing Benue’s development on the global stage, ensuring that the state’s unique challenges are understood and addressed through international partnerships.
