Governor Bago Bans Taxation of Hawkers and Petty Traders in Niger State

In a bold policy move, Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has officially prohibited the taxation of hawkers and petty traders across the state.
The directive, announced through Chief Press Secretary Bologi Ibrahim, aims to protect small-scale traders from multiple and unauthorized levies often imposed at the local government level.
“We have observed with dismay how petty traders and hawkers are being exploited through multiple taxes. From today, no hawker or petty trader should be taxed in Niger State. Anybody found imposing levies on them will face serious consequences for extortion,” Governor Bago declared.
He emphasized that Niger State already operates a centralized tax system, which exempts hawkers and petty traders from any form of taxation.
This move aligns with similar measures implemented in Anambra and Ebonyi states, where governors have taken steps to protect low-income earners from excessive taxation and harassment by revenue collectors.
Experts note that illegal and excessive taxation of informal traders has long hindered small business growth in Nigeria, reducing profit margins and discouraging entrepreneurship. By eliminating these financial burdens, the Bago administration is fostering a more supportive economic environment for small businesses in Niger State.
