Governor Buni Appointed Chairman of Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has been elected as the new Chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum, marking a significant milestone in regional cooperation and development efforts.
The election took place during the 5th Edition of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum, held in Maiduguri, Nigeria, from January 29-31, 2025.
Strengthening Regional Cooperation for Peace and Development
In his acceptance speech, Governor Buni expressed deep gratitude to his fellow governors, delegates, and stakeholders for their support and contributions to the forum’s success. He also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership and commitment to peace, security, and sustainable development in the Lake Chad Basin region.
The forum, attended by governors from Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, focused on stabilization, peacebuilding, and regional cooperation under the theme:
“Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin: Consolidating Gains, Commitment to Peace, Cross-Border Cooperation, Security, and Sustainable Development for a Resilient Community.”
Governor Buni’s Vision for the Forum
As the new chairman, Governor Buni pledged to:
- Strengthen partnerships with regional governments and development agencies.
- Enhance security coordination to address insurgency and cross-border threats.
- Promote economic resilience through investments in infrastructure and sustainable livelihoods.
- Advance peacebuilding efforts for the long-term stability of communities in the Lake Chad Basin.
Governor Buni also commended the outgoing chairperson, Governor Ildjima Abdraman of Hadjer Lamis Province, Chad, for her dedicated leadership and contributions to the forum’s objectives.
