Governor Radda Revives Gidan Kuli Groundnut Mill, Boosts Agro-Economy and Women Empowerment in Katsina

In a bold move to revive Katsina State’s agro-industrial heritage, Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda has completed the comprehensive renovation of the iconic Gidan Kuli groundnut oil mill in Kankia—more than two decades after it went dormant. The revival of the facility marks a significant milestone in the administration’s aggressive push for agricultural transformation and economic diversification.
Speaking during the unveiling of the revamped centre, Governor Radda described the mill as a symbol of Northern Nigeria’s once-thriving groundnut economy, which his administration is determined to restore for the benefit of farmers, entrepreneurs, and the broader state economy.
“Groundnut production once defined Northern Nigeria’s prosperity, and we are determined to reclaim that legacy. This project represents our commitment to revitalizing our agricultural roots and fostering economic resilience,” the Governor stated.
The Gidan Kuli mill, now repositioned as a state-of-the-art Groundnut Processing Centre under the supervision of the Ministry of Women Affairs, stands as a testament to the administration’s inclusive approach to development. Governor Radda emphasized the strategic alignment of the project with his broader economic agenda.
“By restoring this facility, we are not only creating a reliable market for our groundnut farmers but also generating employment and building value chains that will make Katsina a leader in agro-processing,” he affirmed.
Highlighting the centre’s special role in empowering women, Governor Radda explained, “We placed this project under the Ministry of Women Affairs because women are at the heart of agricultural processing. This centre will uplift thousands of women entrepreneurs and serve as a beacon of hope for grassroots development.”
The facility’s massive overhaul was executed by the Katsina Youth Craft Village (KYCV) under the leadership of Engineer Kabir Abdullahi Kofar Soro. The renovations included refurbishing legacy equipment, installing modern processing machines, and constructing administrative blocks, perimeter fencing, and retail shops—all designed to meet 21st-century industrial standards.
Once fully operational, the Gidan Kuli Groundnut Processing Centre is projected to create over 500 direct and indirect jobs, boost local agribusinesses, and stimulate economic growth across the region.
Governor Radda’s revival of the mill not only breathes new life into Katsina’s agricultural economy but also reinforces his administration’s dedication to innovation, empowerment, and sustainable development.
