A Day of Unity and Gratitude for Lagos Workers

Lagos State’s 2025 Workers’ Day celebration was a remarkable display of solidarity, with a large turnout of union groups from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) marking the occasion with a vibrant parade at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan. Despite the rains, workers showcased their unity and resolve as they celebrated their contributions to the state’s development.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who joined the celebrations, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare and dignity of Lagos workers. He emphasized that the government’s dedication to workers’ well-being remains at the core of his development agenda.

“Lagos continues to lead in worker remuneration, as we have consistently fulfilled our promises, including the implementation of the new minimum wage,” said Governor Sanwo-Olu. “Our workers are key players in the economic development of this state, and we have ensured they are at the forefront of our economic planning.”

The Governor proudly shared that Lagos remains the highest-paying state in the country, further reiterating his government’s dedication to continuous improvement in service conditions. He also noted that his administration has invested in expanding training and capacity development, offering workers new skills and digital competencies for the future.

Sanwo-Olu took the opportunity to express confidence in the positive effects of the Federal Government’s reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which have already led to improvements in sectors like agriculture, ultimately reducing food prices.

“We are moving forward with renewed energy and solidarity,” he said. “Let’s continue to build a future where every worker’s efforts are rewarded and every citizen’s potential is realized.”

A Compassionate and Worker-Focused Government

Governor Sanwo-Olu also highlighted the compassionate approach his administration takes toward workers’ needs, with particular emphasis on the approval of a new salary structure that raised the minimum wage to N85,000, the highest in the country. He encouraged further dialogue to address the increasing cost of living, acknowledging the challenges faced by workers in this regard.

The Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Mr. Afolabi Ayantayo, underscored the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to improving service conditions and ensuring that workers have a safe and empowering environment to thrive.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu has implemented the highest wage scale in Nigeria, ensuring workers are adequately compensated for their contributions,” said Ayantayo.

NLC Chairman, Comrade Funmi Sessi, expressed gratitude to the Governor for the wage increment while urging further review to meet the rising cost of living. Similarly, TUC Chairman, Comrade Gbenga Ekundayo, called for a reduction in electricity tariffs, citing the financial strain on workers and small businesses.

Despite these challenges, Head of Service Mr. Bode Agoro reaffirmed that Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration is responsive, committed to creating a secure and conducive working environment where all workers can thrive.
