Governor Sanwo-Olu Champions Inclusive and Efficient Local Governance at LGSC Summit

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening grassroots governance and enhancing service delivery across Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

Speaking at the 2025 Local Government Summit, organized by the Lagos State Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, emphasized that local councils are the foundation of governance and development.

“Local Governments are the closest tier of government to the people and must be people-centered, inclusive, and focused on delivering essential services efficiently,” he stated.

The Summit, themed “Strengthening Grassroots Governance and Service Delivery in LGAs and LCDAs,”provided a platform for discussions on challenges, best practices, and policy recommendations for local governance improvements.

Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted his administration’s achievements in infrastructure, policy reforms, and capacity-building initiatives, which have significantly improved governance at the grassroots level.

“We are committed to building a Lagos where every citizen, regardless of background, has access to quality services and opportunities. Our THEMES Plus Agenda continues to prioritize policies that strengthen local governance,” he added.

Looking ahead to the upcoming local government elections, the Governor called for free, fair, and credible polls, emphasizing the importance of democratic accountability in local governance.

Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Hon. Kamal Bayewu, described the summit as a significant platform for dialogue and strategic planning, aimed at repositioning grassroots governance as the cornerstone of sustainable development.

“This summit is not just an event; it is a forum for reflection, dialogue, and actionable strategies to improve service delivery and enhance residents’ quality of life,” he noted.

The Permanent Secretary of LGSC, Mrs. Abosede George, provided a recap of resolutions from previous summits, highlighting key policy adjustments and capacity-building programs that have enhanced efficiency at the local government level.

Key discussions at the summit included:

  1. Capacity-building programs for local council officials
  2. Policy recommendations for service delivery improvements
  3. Strategies for enhancing community participation in governance

Former LGSC Chairman, Alhaji Babatunde Rotinwa, in his presentation, outlined a comprehensive approach to improving governance and service delivery, emphasizing the need for accountability, innovation, and citizen engagement.

The Sanwo-Olu administration remains committed to empowering local councils, ensuring grassroots governance is transparent, accountable, and development-focused.
