Governor Sanwo-Olu Upholds High Building Permit Fees to Enhance Transparency and Prevent Bribery
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State addressed concerns about the cost of building permits at the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) conference, emphasizing that these fees are a strategic approach to promoting accountability and transparency in the construction industry.
He explained that paying a cost-reflective fee encourages developers to abide by approved building standards, reducing the likelihood of bribery for unauthorized structures. “By investing in proper approvals, developers are less inclined to compromise inspectors,” he noted, reinforcing the state’s commitment to institutional reforms aimed at safety and ethical practices.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s stance aligns with ongoing efforts to prevent structural hazards, such as those leading to building collapses, which often stem from unauthorized construction.
