Governor Sanwo-Olu’s Administration Strengthens Financial Governance with Strategic Retreat for State Accountants

In a major stride toward enhancing financial governance and investor confidence, the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, organised a transformative four-day retreat for Directors and Heads of Finance and Accounts across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). Held at the serene Lakowe Golf Lakes Resort, the retreat served as a platform for innovation, collaboration, and professional growth in public sector financial management.
The Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Abayomi Oluyomi, who was represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Taxation and Revenue, Hon. Abdul-Kabir Opeyemi Ogungbo, opened the retreat by highlighting its dual purpose: promoting professional development and strengthening teamwork. Themed “Excellence in Teamwork: Collaborating for Success in Public Sector Financial Management”, the event reflected Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to sustainable economic excellence through collaborative service delivery.
Underscoring the importance of the event, the Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Finance, Hon. Femi Saheed, described the new Accounting Manual under review as a “game-changer” for the state. He expressed optimism that its eventual adoption would position Lagos as a model for transparent and investor-friendly governance. “Once operational, Lagos will again set the pace in public sector financial reforms,” he said, adding that the manual would empower the House of Assembly to effectively evaluate the financial health of MDAs.
The Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, further praised the dedication of public accountants as changemakers and champions of fiscal discipline, asserting that they are central to the state’s future. He commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for providing enabling environments that value excellence, innovation, and accountability.
Dr. Abiodun Muritala, the State Accountant-General and Permanent Secretary, emphasised that the retreat was not just about updating a document but about reinforcing a culture of transparency, accountability, and international best practices. He encouraged participants to share knowledge, engage with the evolving financial landscape, and build mutual trust.
Consultant and Engagement Leader for the manual’s development, Mr. Gbenga Adepetu, noted that the current manual, over three decades old, no longer reflects the dynamic financial practices of Lagos State. He affirmed that the new version will unify accounting processes and enhance institutional memory across MDAs.
The event brought together key figures in the financial ecosystem, including the Special Adviser to the Governor on Internal Audit, Dr. (Mrs.) Oyeyemi Ayoola, and several Permanent Secretaries. Their presence underscored the Governor’s unwavering support for initiatives that reinforce good governance, professionalism, and investor confidence.
