Governor Zulum Empowers 250,000 Citizens with Food Assistance Amidst Flood Recovery Efforts

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of residents by launching a large-scale food distribution program for 250,000 beneficiaries across the state’s 27 local government areas.
Speaking at the official launch on Wednesday, Governor Zulum emphasized that the initiative aims to alleviate the economic hardships caused by last year’s devastating flood, which disrupted livelihoods and businesses.
He stated, “We are all aware that our beloved state has yet to fully recover from the recent flood disaster that affected Maiduguri, Jere, and other communities. Many families are still counting their losses. I am deeply moved by the pain and hardship this disaster has caused, particularly for the most vulnerable among us—those who have lost their homes, livelihoods, and even loved ones.”
The governor outlined that 100,000 people in Maiduguri metropolis and its environs would receive the aid, while an additional 150,000 beneficiaries from 25 other local government councils would also be included in the distribution.
Additionally, he highlighted the importance of food security and self-sufficiency, particularly in light of the bumper harvest recorded across the state. Governor Zulum announced that palliative distribution would be reduced by 90%, shifting focus towards long-term economic empowerment through agriculture.
He stated, “Agriculture is not just a means of survival—it is a powerful tool for economic empowerment. Our government is committed to creating an enabling environment for our youth and entrepreneurs to engage in agribusiness and other productive ventures. We will continue to invest in agricultural inputs, infrastructure, and support programs to enhance the sector and drive sustainable economic growth.”
Governor Zulum also commended the Federal Government, sister states, and well-meaning individuals and organizations for their continued support to Borno State. He expressed gratitude for their solidarity and generosity, emphasizing that their commitment has been a source of encouragement for the people of Borno.
The event was attended by Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly (represented by Deputy Speaker Engr. Abdullahi Askira), House of Representatives Member Engr. Bukar Talba, former Deputy Governor Usman Durkwa, and other key government officials.
