In a groundbreaking move to improve healthcare access in Borno State, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has directed the expansion of a free eye surgery initiative to benefit 10,000 residents suffering from visual impairments, including cataracts. The programme, launched in partnership with Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, aims to transform lives and restore vision for thousands across the state.

Governor Zulum made the announcement on Monday during the official flag-off of the programme in Maiduguri. Originally designed to cater to 1,000 people, the initiative was significantly scaled up after witnessing an overwhelming turnout of residents in need of medical intervention.

“We launched a programme to provide medical attention to over 1,000 individuals, focusing on cataract operations. During the exercise, I was struck by the overwhelming number of people in need. Many have not received medical attention in over two years because of the cost of operation,” the governor explained.

To ensure equitable access, the expanded programme will conduct 4,000 surgeries in Maiduguri, 3,000 in Southern Borno, and another 3,000 in Northern Borno. Governor Zulum also approved a cash support package of N50,000 for each patient to aid their post-operative care and recovery.

Expressing gratitude for the collaboration, Zulum lauded Senator Ndume and other stakeholders for their invaluable contributions. “On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, I express my heartfelt appreciation to all who have contributed to this initiative. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our citizens,” he said.

The eye camp is a testament to the Zulum administration’s commitment to prioritizing healthcare and addressing the needs of vulnerable residents. It underscores the governor’s vision of a compassionate and inclusive leadership that leaves no one behind.

Governor Zulum’s proactive approach to addressing healthcare challenges continues to earn him widespread commendation, as this initiative marks another milestone in the administration’s effort to enhance the well-being of the people of Borno State.
