Governor Zulum Moves to Review Ban on Metal Scavenging in Borno

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has initiated steps to review the ban on metal scavenging activities in the state. The ban, initially imposed in July 2023, aimed to protect scavengers from Boko Haram insurgents who posed significant risks to their safety. However, Governor Zulum recently approved the formation of a committee to review the ban, recognizing the need to provide a means of livelihood for the many youths involved in the scavenging business.
The newly formed committee includes representatives from the Nigerian Army, Police, NSCDC, DSS, and several ministries, alongside the Association of Metal Scavengers, Borno State Chapter. The review will consider both the safety of scavengers and the socio-economic importance of the business to the youth.
