Imo Celebrates Olympic Day Walk, Emphasizes Sports Development

Imo State enthusiastically participated in the 2024 Olympic Day Walk, joining the global community in celebrating this prestigious event. Led by Prince Sir Eleazar Onyewuchi Ogbonna, Chairman of the Imo State Sports Commission, and Commissioner for Sports, Obinna Evarestus Onyeocha, along with the state’s Director of Sports, Mrs. Patricia Ezeji, the event highlighted Imo State’s commitment to sports excellence.
Prince Ogbonna emphasized Imo’s role as a hub for nurturing sports champions and affirmed his dedication to ensuring that Imo-born athletes proudly represent their state. He outlined ongoing efforts with the sports commissioner to implement robust programs for grassroots sports development.
Commissioner Onyeocha reiterated Imo State’s determination to attract athletes from across the country and implement strategic measures to elevate sports to new heights within the state.
Dr. Ray Opara, representing the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC), commended Imo State for its active participation in the Olympic Day Walk, despite starting late due to cleanup activities. He underscored the event’s significance in preparing for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France, emphasizing its role in promoting participation in sports and fostering unity.
In a global message, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach highlighted how the Olympics bridges divides, unites people in peace and solidarity, and inspires athletes to achieve greatness. The event aimed to promote the Olympic spirit, encourage sports participation, and unite athletes and non-athletes alike in the spirit of camaraderie.
