Imo State Granted Regulatory Authority Over Electricity Market

0

Imo State has achieved a significant milestone with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) granting it regulatory oversight of the electricity market in compliance with the Electricity Act 2023.

According to an order signed by NERC Chairman, Sanusi Garba, and effective from July 1, 2024, Imo State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ISERC) will now oversee the intrastate electricity market in Imo State. This decision follows Imo State’s adherence to constitutional amendments and the Electricity Act, fulfilling all necessary conditions as stipulated.

The order mandates the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to establish a subsidiary (“EEDC SubCo”) under the Companies and Allied Matters Act. This subsidiary will assume responsibility for the intrastate supply and distribution of electricity in Imo State, operating under ISERC’s regulatory authority.

Furthermore, EEDC is directed to delineate Imo State’s network boundaries, ensuring it operates as a standalone entity with boundary meters at all points where its network intersects neighboring states. Imo State now joins Enugu, Ondo, and Ekiti as the fourth state to receive regulatory authority over its electricity market, marking a significant step towards enhancing energy governance and management within the state.
