Jigawa Leads Livestock Revolution with Federal Collaboration for Sustainable Development

Jigawa State is at the forefront of livestock transformation, partnering with the Federal Government to drive food security, job creation, and economic diversification.
This commitment was reinforced at the Jigawa State Stakeholders Consultative Workshop on Livestock Reforms, held at the Manpower Development Institute (MDI), Dutse. Organized by the Jigawa Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee (JLRIC), the workshop brought together key stakeholders, including the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee led by Professor Attahiru Jega, to chart a progressive course for the sector.
Governor Umar Namadi, in his address, highlighted the cultural and economic significance of livestock in the state, noting that the sector contributed nearly 10% of Jigawa’s GDP in 2022. He unveiled his administration’s 12-Point Agenda for livestock development, which includes improving animal breeding, expanding dairy production, and establishing a dedicated Ministry for Livestock Development.
“As part of our commitment to this vision, we have trained 300 Community Animal Health Workers, vaccinated over 560,000 animals, and gazetted 57 grazing reserves across the state,” the Governor stated, emphasizing his administration’s determination to create a thriving livestock sector.
Professor Attahiru Jega praised Jigawa’s leadership, describing Governor Namadi’s decision to personally chair the 17-member committee on livestock reforms as a testament to his dedication to sectoral transformation. He also revealed that JBS S.A., a global livestock company, plans to invest $2.5 billion in Nigeria’s livestock industry, with Jigawa poised to play a central role in the initiative.
The workshop concluded with a call for stakeholders to actively contribute to shaping a sustainable and productive livestock sector, solidifying Jigawa’s position as a model for Nigeria’s livestock revolution.
