Jigawa Sets the Pace in National Food Security and Agricultural Growth

Jigawa State has reaffirmed its leadership in Nigeria’s agricultural transformation with the successful hosting of the Wheat Farmers Green Field Celebration in Dabi Village. The event highlighted the state’s remarkable contributions to economic diversification, food security, and sustainable development, demonstrating the unwavering commitment of the state government and its resilient farmers.
The celebration, which drew participants from across the country and was widely broadcast, showcased the progress made in wheat farming and reinforced confidence in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. The event also underscored the impact of strategic partnerships in advancing food self-sufficiency, with the collaboration between the Federal Government, the Jigawa State Government, and the Flour Mills Association of Nigeria (FMAN) yielding impressive results.
For the 2025 farming season, over 80,000 hectares of wheat have been cultivated in Jigawa State, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s food security drive. Federal Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Abubakar Kyari, praised Jigawa for its strategic approach, recalling that in the 2023/2024 season, the Federal Government supported the cultivation of 40,000 hectares, while the state government and private partners contributed an additional 15,000 hectares. This expansion has now grown to 80,000 hectares, supporting over 160,000 farmers with subsidized inputs.
In recognition of Jigawa’s vital role in national food production, the Federal Government has provided 10,000 water pump generators, sprayers, liters of insecticide, agro-fertilizers, and herbicides for free distribution to farmers. This initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, prioritizing agriculture as a cornerstone of national development.
Governor Umar Namadi reiterated his administration’s dedication to expanding agricultural investments, outlining plans to scale up wheat production to 500,000 hectares by 2030. He also highlighted the state’s impressive achievements in rice production, with over 1.6 million metric tons of rice produced in 2024. Preparations for the 2025 dry-season rice farming are well underway, with ₦8.27 billion earmarked as a 30% advance payment for farm input costs, benefiting 58,500 farmers across 50,000 hectares of rice farmland in 1,000 clusters.
Governor Namadi expressed appreciation for the Federal Government’s continued support, assuring stakeholders of Jigawa’s commitment to strengthening wheat and rice production for national growth.
The Wheat Farmers Green Field Celebration was a powerful statement of Nigeria’s resolve to achieve food security, with Jigawa State standing as a beacon of success. As Minister Kyari aptly stated, “What is taking place in Jigawa State is a classic example of what can be achieved through strong partnerships and commitment.” With the continued support of federal authorities, private sector partners, and the relentless dedication of its farmers, Jigawa is setting the standard for food production and economic prosperity in Nigeria.
