The Kaduna State Government has officially commemorated the 2024 International Day of Education, focusing on the theme: “AI and Education: Protecting Human Agency During a Wave of Automation.” This year’s celebration underscores the state’s commitment to leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance education while maintaining a balance between technology and human engagement.

Speaking at a press conference, Kaduna State Commissioner for Education, Professor Muhammad Sani Bello, highlighted the significant strides made by the government in integrating AI technologies into the education sector. These efforts earned Kaduna State the second runner-up award for ICT Human Capital Development at the 12th National Council on Communication and Digital Economy in 2024.

Advancing AI-Driven Education in Kaduna

The Commissioner outlined key government initiatives aimed at improving digital education, including:

• Procurement and distribution of computers to schools.

• Provision of internet connectivity to facilitate e-learning.

• Stable power supply through solar energy to ensure uninterrupted learning.

• Development of AI-driven simulations for enhanced teaching and learning experiences.

• Capacity-building programs for teachers to leverage AI tools effectively.

“These efforts aim to enhance learning outcomes, expand access to quality education, and equip students with skills needed for a rapidly evolving, technology-driven world,” Professor Bello stated.

Ethical AI Integration and Future Workforce Preparation

While acknowledging AI’s potential benefits, including improved learning experiences, enhanced critical thinking, and workforce readiness, the Commissioner also stressed the risks associated with automation, such as job displacement and reduced human agency.

“To mitigate these risks, the Kaduna State Government is adopting a thoughtful and ethical approach to AI integration, ensuring that technology complements rather than replaces human input in education,” he explained.

The successful commemoration of the International Day of Education was made possible through collaborations with key stakeholders, including ROOSCP, AGILE, PLANE, UNICEF, and SCI.

“The state government remains committed to policies that promote both innovation and human development,” Professor Bello affirmed.
