Under the leadership of Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, Katsina State has made remarkable strides in improving access to potable water, addressing a long-standing issue exacerbated by challenging climatic conditions. Previously, many residents relied on costly boreholes, underscoring the urgent need for a sustainable solution.

Governor Radda’s administration has embarked on ambitious initiatives to overhaul the state’s water infrastructure, recognizing clean water as a fundamental human right and essential for public health. Over the past year, the administration has invested 400 million Naira in upgrading key water facilities, including the Ajiwa water treatment plant and pumping station. These upgrades, featuring new high-lift and raw water submersible pumps and pipelines, represent a significant advancement in water treatment capabilities and quality for communities statewide.

Governor Radda has also addressed the high recurrent costs of providing clean water by committing to sustainable solutions. With an investment of 1.4 billion Naira in water treatment chemicals and diesel across nine treatment plants, the administration is now exploring renewable energy options to reduce diesel consumption and enhance long-term sustainability.

The World Bank-supported Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (SURWASH) project has been instrumental in the state’s progress. With strict performance standards and 5 billion Naira in funding, the SURWASH project has significantly supported water supply improvements. Katsina State’s exemplary performance under this project highlights Governor Radda’s visionary leadership and commitment to excellence.

Governor Radda reaffirms his administration’s unwavering dedication to expanding access to clean, potable water for all residents. Preparations are underway to scale up efforts under the SURWASH project, ensuring every community in the state has access to safe and reliable water sources.
