The First Lady of Katsina State, Zulaihat Radda, has launched a sustainable moringa farming program aimed at empowering 3.6 million women across the state.

The initiative, under her Safe Space Humanitarian Initiative (SASHIN), is in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development and focuses on economic independence, food security, and poverty alleviation.

Speaking at the unveiling event in Katsina, Mrs. Radda described the initiative as a pathway to financial independence for women, offering them resources, training, and access to markets.

“This project is not just about farming; it is about economic empowerment and self-sufficiency for our women and youth,” she stated.

Key components of the initiative include:

• Provision of moringa seedlings and farming resources

• Comprehensive training on cultivation, harvesting, and processing

• Direct market access for both local and international buyers

To incentivize participation, women who successfully nurture their trees for three months will receive N50,000, ensuring that they benefit financially while contributing to agricultural development.

The initiative aims to achieve:

• 34 tonnes of moringa leaves per month

• 50 tonnes of moringa seeds per quarter

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Prof. Ahmed Mohammed, emphasized that moringa farming is highly suitable for Katsina’s climate and has enormous economic and nutritional benefits.

“With the support of the state government and our development partners, we are committed to making this program a success,” he stated.

The First Lady assured participants that her initiative would facilitate partnerships between farmers and buyers, ensuring that women fully benefit from the economic opportunities within the moringa farming industry.

The Katsina State Government continues to demonstrate commitment to women’s empowerment and economic transformation, positioning the state as a leader in agricultural innovation and community-driven development.
