At the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration in Katsina, the state chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) called for immediate and full implementation of the national minimum wage across all sectors, including tertiary institutions yet to comply. The NLC Chairman, Hussaini Hamisu, also appealed for urgent reforms in the healthcare system, citing over 4,000 retired health workers yet to be replaced, thereby affecting service delivery at the primary healthcare level.

Hamisu acknowledged Governor Radda’s approval of gratuity payments and minimum wage at the local government level but urged swift action to resolve lingering delays. He also requested the extension of promotions for civil servants to Grade Level 17 and called for attention to unresolved challenges facing local government retirees.

On security, the union praised the Governor’s efforts, noting a significant improvement in peace and stability across the state. The NLC urged the Federal Government to reinforce security in agricultural communities to protect farmers from threats and criminality.

Responding to the concerns, Governor Radda expressed surprise at the delay in implementing the local government minimum wage, stating that it had already been approved. He directed the Head of Civil Service to investigate the issue and ensure immediate resolution.
