Kebbi Government Expands School Feeding Program, Empowers Students

In a bold move to improve education and student well-being, Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has increased the state’s monthly boarding school feeding budget from ₦175 million to ₦300 million. The Governor made this announcement while receiving the national leadership of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the Government House, Birnin Kebbi.
Governor Idris emphasized that the initiative aims to enhance students’ nutrition and learning experience. “We are committed to ensuring our children remain in school with access to quality meals. By increasing the feeding budget, we want to provide delicious and nutritious food that will sustain them and enhance their academic performance,” he said.
The Governor also highlighted his administration’s unprecedented investment in agriculture, noting that Kebbi is the only state in Nigeria that has procured 500 trucks of fertilizer and distributed them free of charge to farmers. This initiative, he explained, is aimed at boosting food security and supporting the state’s agricultural economy.
Beyond agriculture, the Governor has also prioritized social welfare programs. He disclosed that his administration recently procured and distributed 550 trucks of assorted food items to residents to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal.
“In the next three weeks, we will commence the distribution of another batch of fertilizers, alongside 25,000 solar-powered water pumps, pesticides, and herbicides—all provided free to farmers to encourage large-scale farming,” he announced.
Governor Idris assured Kebbi residents that his administration remains dedicated to implementing policies that positively impact their lives. He reiterated his commitment to economic empowerment, revealing that three months ago, the state government disbursed ₦100,000 each to 65,000 people—totaling ₦65 billion—under the Kebbi Cares program to promote self-sufficiency. The second phase of this initiative is set to commence soon.
Recognizing his leadership and vision, NUJ National President, Alhassan Yahaya, praised Governor Idris for his remarkable strides in governance. “Your administration has set new benchmarks in agriculture, education, health, and empowerment. These initiatives will leave a lasting legacy in Kebbi’s history,” he noted.
