The Kwara State Government, through the World Bank-assisted Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), has successfully concluded a five-day training program for 100 livestock farmers and value chain actors on commercial fodder production and value addition.

The training, held at the Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute (ARMTI), Kabba-Owode, Ifelodun LGA, was organized in collaboration with Bayero University Kano’s Centre for Dryland Agriculture (CDA) and S G Imperial Concept Limited.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, State Project Coordinator, Mr. Olusoji Oyawoye, represented by Project Extension Officer, Mr. Nureni AbdulRasaq, highlighted the economic and security benefits of fodder production, emphasizing its role in reducing farmer-herder conflicts.

“By promoting commercial fodder production, we can mitigate clashes as pastoralists will have designated feed sources for their livestock, easing pressure on farmlands,” he explained.

Lead facilitator, Dr. Akeem Ajeigbe, projected that Nigeria’s population could reach 300 million within the next 25 years, making it crucial to mechanize, intensify, and commercialize agriculture for food security.

Participants learned theoretical and practical aspects of processing fodder from crop residues into livestock feeds, positioning them for commercial success in livestock farming.

The initiative is a bold step towards improving food security, economic livelihoods, and sustainable livestock farming in Kwara State.
