The Kwara State Government, in collaboration with Sightsavers, has launched a mass administration of medicines to combat Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) as part of efforts to eliminate Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in the state. The flag-off event took place at Afon, Asa Local Government Area, with the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam, represented by Permanent Secretary Hajia Afusat Nike Ibrahim. Dr. El-Imam reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the health and safety of its citizens.

Lymphatic Filariasis is a parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitoes, which can lead to severe disabilities and disfigurement if untreated. The commissioner highlighted that stigmatization is a major issue for individuals suffering from this disease. She emphasized that annual mass administration of medicines, as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), is key to eradicating LF and other NTDs.

Dr. El-Imam praised the achievements made in 10 out of the 11 endemic LGAs in Kwara and commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for prioritizing health interventions. The event also featured remarks from Hon. Owolabi AbdulRazaq, Chairman of the House Committee on Health and Environment, and Dr. Joy Shuaibu, Sightsavers’ Country Director, who lauded Kwara State’s success in NTD elimination through free treatments and surgeries.
