In a shining display of effective public-private partnership and community engagement, the Lagos State Government has celebrated the remarkable contributions of Amstel Malta and the Debra’s Palace Initiative for their groundbreaking roles in improving maternal health and supporting the emotional development of the boy child in Lagos.

Amstel Malta’s Lifesaving Impact Through MamaBase

At the forefront of maternal health transformation, Amstel Malta has earned high praise for its pivotal support in the inaugural phase of the MamaBase programme—an innovative initiative driven by the Maternal and Reproductive Health (MRH) Collective and backed by the Lagos State Government. Officially launched in October 2023, the programme aimed to combat Nigeria’s staggering maternal mortality rate, which sees nearly 79,500 women die annually due to childbirth-related complications.

Thanks to Amstel Malta’s early investment and advocacy, MamaBase was able to enroll 7,883 pregnant women in some of Lagos State’s most underserved communities. The programme’s stunning success included a 99.9% maternal survival rate, with over 80% of participants delivering in health facilities and 60% completing at least four antenatal visits—critical milestones in achieving improved maternal outcomes.

By underwriting key costs such as scans, antenatal registration, and skilled delivery services, Amstel Malta directly removed barriers that had historically denied women access to quality healthcare. The initiative not only saved lives but also demonstrated the transformative potential of brand-led social responsibility efforts.

Speaking on behalf of the Lagos State Government, Dr. Abimbola Mabogunje, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Health Board, lauded Amstel Malta’s commitment. Representing the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, Dr. Mabogunje emphasized that the partnership aligned perfectly with the state’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ development agenda, particularly under Health and Environment.

As plans are underway to expand MamaBase to 12 additional local government areas, the state government is encouraging more corporate stakeholders to emulate Amstel Malta’s example and invest in socially impactful initiatives. “Amstel Malta showed what’s possible when brands step forward with purpose,” noted Prof. Abayomi. “Their legacy in this programme is a lasting one, and we are deeply grateful.”
