Lagos Launches Gates-Funded Health Advocacy Project to Boost Maternal and Child Health

In a bold step toward transforming health outcomes, the Lagos State Government has launched a multi-year advocacy project to improve Primary Healthcare (PHC) and maternal, newborn, child, adolescent health and nutrition (RMNCAH+N). The initiative, funded by the Gates Foundation and co-implemented by EngenderHealth, was unveiled at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, described the project as a timely response aligned with the THEMES Plus health agenda of the Sanwo-Olu administration. The project aims to strengthen gender-responsive reforms, drive policy advocacy, and boost budgetary commitments for PHC and RMNCAH+N from 2024 to 2028.

Speakers from UN agencies, the Gates Foundation, and civil society—including LASHMA, LASAM, and CCSI—praised the project’s collaborative approach and the state’s leadership in health reforms. With Lagos setting the pace as a model for subnational health delivery, the initiative is expected to drive accountability, expand access, and significantly reduce preventable deaths in the state.
