The Lagos State Government is positioning its farmers to take advantage of the booming global coconut yogurt market, which is currently valued at $102.01 million and projected to reach $302.32 million by 2031.

According to Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola OlusanyaLagos will intensify efforts to support coconut farmers as the demand for plant-based, dairy-free alternatives continues to rise. She noted that coconut yogurt is becoming a preferred choice among health-conscious consumers due to its rich texture and high protein content.

Ms. Olusanya revealed that the Lagos State Coconut Development Authority (LASCODA) has embarked on an ambitious plan to plant coconut trees across all established housing estates in the state as part of efforts to strengthen the coconut economy.

She highlighted that Lagos aims to regain its status as Nigeria’s top producer of high-quality coconuts, ensuring that farmers have access to improved planting materials and agricultural techniques.

To further bolster coconut production, the state government has invested N250 million into a five-year Coconut Value Chain Upgrade Strategy, supported by the United Nations’ Agri-Food Systems Transformation Accelerator (ASTA) with a $4 million investment.

Additionally, the government is providing training on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) to equip coconut farmers with the necessary skills to enhance productivity and sustainability.

“Our vision goes beyond planting coconuts; we are building an industry that will support economic growth, create jobs, and make Lagos a leader in the coconut value chain,” Ms. Olusanya stated.

With these initiatives, Lagos is poised to become a major player in the global coconut yogurt market, creating new opportunities for farmers and boosting the state’s agricultural economy.
