Lagos Showcases Urban Development Achievements to Global Audience

Lagos State has proudly presented its successes in sustainable urbanization to an international audience, sharing its strides in housing and urban renewal at the prestigious UN-Habitat 2024 World Urban Forum (WUF12) in Egypt.
Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, delivered a keynote address, detailing Lagos’ innovative approaches to balancing rapid urbanization with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 11 on inclusive and sustainable urban growth. He highlighted how Lagos is tackling housing, infrastructure, and urban regeneration to create a livable, equitable, and green cityscape.
The Commissioner underscored ongoing partnerships with financial institutions that have facilitated the development of affordable homes, with mortgage options that bring housing within reach for low- and middle-income earners. These collaborations mark Lagos’ commitment to social housing, helping reduce the housing deficit and enhancing quality of life.
Lagos’ urban renewal projects in areas such as Makoko, Ajegunle, and Eti-Osa exemplify the government’s dedication to community engagement and sustainable growth. With projects that integrate local input, Lagos is shaping its neighborhoods to be inclusive and forward-looking.
Akinderu-Fatai encouraged international partnerships and long-term funding solutions to further support Lagos’ vision of building a city that stands as a beacon of resilience and inclusivity for the future. Dr. Abiodun Olumide, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, reinforced this commitment, emphasizing Lagos’ proactive planning in accommodating exponential population growth.
