In line with its Strategic Transportation Master Plan, the Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to restructure unregulated public transport bus operations, beginning with the Lekki-Epe corridor.

Hon. Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, disclosed this during a meeting with Public Transport Bus Operators and Union leaders at Alausa. He described the current state of bus operations along the Lekki-Epe corridor as chaotic and emphasized the need for collaboration to integrate the informal transport sector into the state’s Bus Reform Initiative.

The restructuring plan includes deploying High Capacity Buses, re-allocating Korope/Minibuses to inner routes, and introducing an E-ticketing system to enhance service efficiency and passenger comfort. Other measures involve re-registration, recertification, and strict regulation of bus operations to ensure safety and standardization.

Hon. Giwa outlined the phased implementation of the plan, urging transport operators to register with the Ministry of Transportation within the next two weeks to receive designated routes. He warned of penalties for non-compliance with the regulations, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enforcing the Transport Sector Reform Law.

Mr. Olawale Musa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, solicited the support of union members in identifying and regulating unregistered operators along the Lekki-Epe corridor. Dr. Amure, Head of Bus Services at LAMATA, highlighted the corridor’s strategic importance in advancing the state’s Bus Reform Initiative.

The meeting concluded with the signing of a communique by stakeholders affirming their commitment to supporting the restructuring initiative, underscoring a collaborative effort towards improving Lagos State’s transportation system.
