Lagos State Government Unveils Ambitious Sustainability Policy

The Lagos State Government has unveiled a groundbreaking sustainability policy aimed at achieving carbon neutrality across its transportation system by 2035. This ambitious plan was announced during the fifth-anniversary celebrations of Lagos Bus Services Ltd. (LBSL), where a new sick bay for staff was also commissioned.
Honourable Temitope Adewale, Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Transportation, revealed that the state will adopt cleaner technologies, such as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric buses, to reach its carbon-neutral goal. Advanced route optimization and reducing emissions from dead mileage are key strategies in this initiative.
Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, emphasized the importance of meticulous planning and continuous review in implementing the policy. He assured that at least 5% of revenue will be allocated to sustainability plans, demonstrating financial commitment to a greener future.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, praised the state’s multimodal transportation system, which includes road, water, and rail options. He highlighted the carbon neutrality policy as a step towards an eco-friendly environment and enhanced transportation efficiency.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, echoed these sentiments, noting the need for specific objectives and regular monitoring to ensure success. Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director/CEO of LAMATA, lauded LBSL for its achievements and commitment to sustainability over the past five years.
LBSL Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Idowu Oguntona, attributed the company’s success to the support of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the dedication of its staff. He underscored the new sick bay as a testament to the company’s commitment to employee welfare, urging staff to continue their hard work and dedication.
