Lagos State Reaffirms Commitment to Combating Child Trafficking

The Lagos State Government has reinforced its unwavering commitment to eradicating child trafficking and ensuring the protection and welfare of children across the state.
At a press briefing held at the Zone II Police Command Headquarters, Onikan, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Hon. Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende, reiterated that child trafficking in any form will not be tolerated in Lagos State. The event also saw the handover of several rescued children by the Nigeria Police Forceto the Ministry for rehabilitation.
Commending the Police Force for its swift intervention, Mr. Ogunlende acknowledged the efforts of law enforcement agencies in rescuing five children from a notorious trafficking syndicate led by Sunday Okputu. The rescued children include:
- Marvelous Obi (1 year old, male)
- Promise Ifekwuna (3 years old, male)
- Somtochukwu Onyemaechi (1 year old, male)
- Chibuzornma Onyemaechi (3 years old, female)
- Praise Chukwu Ibezim (6 years old, male)
“Today’s gathering is a celebration of successful collaboration. The Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is fully committed to safeguarding children’s rights and ensuring they grow up in a safe and nurturing environment,” Mr. Ogunlende declared.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Ajao S. Adewale, credited the successful rescue operation to community intelligence, strong inter-agency cooperation, and decisive law enforcement action. He disclosed that the criminal syndicate specialized in trafficking newborns and young children, with key members such as Ibezim Chioma (a middle person and caregiver) and Chinasa Echelibe (responsible for handling the children before sale).
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Pharm. (Mrs.) Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, emphasized that the rescued children would undergo medical evaluation and be placed in government care facilities for proper rehabilitation. She further noted that legal adoption and guardianship options remain available for responsible individuals who wish to provide safe homes for vulnerable children.
This latest intervention underscores Lagos State’s zero-tolerance approach to child trafficking and its continued commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of society.
